An aspect of doing what I do and covering so many underground cats is to see which ones stand out and hold their own, whether that be lyrically or produce such a refreshing product that it’s seen in a different light than the rest, and I feel this project fits in that category! Let’s talk about it!
This is the latest album by MC Savage, The 3rd. A man who I’ve been blessed to discover as of today, and he comes with nine tracks, 21 minutes, and the likes of:
-Sauce Heist
-Big Twin
– CRIMEAPPLE, and on production:
-HOMAGE
-JAWSON
And I gotta say, this project really surprised me! If I had to describe the sound, it would have to be a ‘Street Motion Picture’ in music form. This thing is jam-packed with furious sounds, thrilling instrumentation, and an intense atmosphere that gives goosebumps all around your body!
From the opening track with those opening drum patterns, that evolved into that grimy, synth-filled, bass strings plucked so fucking deeply that it feels like you’re in an action movie right before the murder scene comes on!
As the album progresses, that grimy, muddy soundscape continues and consistently evolves into darker, more violent motions as this record goes out of its way to present such an explosive and dangerous scenery that it’s impossible to look away from!
If I had to describe what this feels like to me, I want you to re visit the vibes and aura of the early Griselda mixtapes, back before the fame! Or even looking at a project from Mobb Deep in the early 90s when the production was unforgiving, relentless, and gritty in every sense of the word! This is how this album sounds to me, 21 minutes of savage production that will slap you in your face if you ain’t careful!
As far as the rapping goes. He also impressed me on the MC front! What stands out about him is his methodical and aggressive approach to the bars. This ain’t about being the flashiest or fastest rapper but instead working on his precision, on sharpening his words and techniques to deliver the toughest bars possible and making sure his flow is deadly and fluent!
You can tell with each word uttered by Savage that he’s thought about what he’s going to say next, he’s spent time perfecting the bars and making sure everything sounds and is placed exactly where it should be.
I can hear the quality control in his voice alone. He has that natural enthusiasm and passion for this rap game and he’s mixed that in with his organic gutter tones and street cadence across the tracks that makes his voice rattle the beats he’s featured on!
I love the features he’s included as well! Although only three names, it’s just enough to provide that star power and showcase his ability to synchronise with others and show his chemistry but also not too overwhelming full of features where he damages his reputation to do the majority of the tracks by himself! I feel he’s found the perfect balance and all names go HARD!
Definitely an album you don’t want to sleep on! It’s intense, master-crafted and thrilling from start to finish!
