In the words of the man himself, it ain’t often we see Action Figure on singles. But whenever he does, you can guarantee it’s going to be a draw one way or another!
This time around he’s with a producer that’s new to me but one that seems to lock in perfectly with the masked crusader! So let’s talk about it!
This is the brand-new single by MC Action Figure 973 and Producer Don Danon and together they drop this acclaimed single with two minutes and 29 seconds of pure, cinematic energy that is bound to stay rent-free in your head all year.
Let’s talk production first. We have Don utilising this old-school/classical rendition of a hip-hop beat with those angelic vocal harmonies that appear ever so subtly run throughout the entire track that’s accompanied by that running chords progression and this jazz-influenced five-note horn that appears every 8-10 seconds or so!
There’s also this minimal use of drum beats running through the track that, although super quiet, adds a certain level of necessary depth and structure to the track!
This is one of those types of instrumentals that I love, low-layered but executed in a grand way. As if you’re sitting in a club in the 1960s listening to an orchestral performance. The kind of beat I could listen to for hours!
Speaking of listening to hours, we have Action. I can’t even lie. I was laughing right out the gate because here we have this absolutely gorgeous, lavish production with that classical feel and what’s the first or second bar out his mouth? ‘Two in the pink and one in the stink’. Hey, doesn’t read a room at all!
He probably wears his mask to a five-star Michelin restaurant!
Anyway, on this track he brings his trademark tongue-in-cheek mixed with slick, murderous rhymes as he always has! That’s what makes him stand out from the rest is his ability to switch up his topics and flows depending on what he wants to spit next!
If he wants to tell you he was a shark in his past life, he will! He wants to spit those WWE bars! He will! If he wants to talk about street poetry and gangster bars, he will!
He doesn’t have a ceiling or a lane to conform to! He does whatever he wants, and I respect that heavily!
He always dominates the track with smooth flows, precise wordplay, unpredictable pen game, and a sense of rhythm that not many have as good as him!
Sharp-minded, verbally dangerous, and with a mind that’s forever changing, this man easily has one of the most diverse and versatile verse collections in hip hop, and this one is just another one for the books!
