Let me start by saying this, I’ve seen Kid Bizarre everywhere! He’s on every new project I cover. He’s in serious high demand! With that being said, it’s time for me to cover a new artist who I’ve seen making some waves in the underground, and now it’s time to see how he fares in the opinion of ‘The Serpent Tongue’, so let’s talk about it!
This is the brand-new album by MC Ray Brown with production from the likes of
– Enemigo
– Roid Beats
– Produced by Pi
And MC’s such as
– Craze Colon
– Jay Ferg
– Kid Bizarre
And the immediate thing I noticed that I appreciated was his regular shoutout and tribute to his late uncle! It’s a nice touch to the man who helped executively produce the record, and I love he has enough respect to shoutout that out!
So, across this 7-track project, we hear Ray showcase his immense charisma, strong cadence, and a no-nonsense approach and attitude that feels powerful and at the same time revealing to hear him speak what’s on his mind and how he views the world.
I love his presence across this one. He ain’t trying to do any of that fake fancy shit or be experimental or wild; he’s just focused on being himself and letting his emotions, verbal precision, and storytelling talk for itself!
He has a strong flow, great penmanship, the type where he brings that raw and rough verses to the forefront. His words land on the beat perfectly smooth, and he doesn’t waste anytime getting to make his points. He says what he feels and sees in his life and then leaves, no filler to be found here!
Another thing I thought was impressive was his chemistry with the various features. He’s a man who can kill it solo or create fire with guests, which just further proves he can do it all on the mic, which is sick!
If you’re looking for a solid, no-bullshit, no-sugar-coating type MC, then this guy is the one for you. From the way he distributes his bars to the beat choices to the natural aura he carries with him on this album, you can tell he’s a real one. Sometimes it’s the more traditional aspects of hip-hop that I appreciate most because that’s when it’s at its most pure!
Now onto the beats, while the MC work is no nonsense, this side of things feels magnificent and cinematic. Even from that opening track with those grand piano keys that feel like something Prince would have done! It had me grooving from the first second! To make this your opening track is such a wild and fantastical choice that I loved.
From there, the album continues its fun, surreal, and lively instrumentation, whether we are talking tracks like -Legendary with those glistening keys, theatrical horns in the background, and the various bass lines that make this a minimal yet strong boom-bap track that has incredible energy!
There’s the track -Boom Bap, which has this vocal loop that I absolutely adored. Reminds me of a similar sample I think Earl Swearshirt used in Doris! Either way, it’s such a gorgeous vocal harmony that I love to hear utilised. Combine that with those thudding drums and thick bass lines that come together to create this immersive listening experience that I fucked with heavily!
Another track I loved was -Residuals because this one had a heavy jazz feel to it with those delicate yet infectious piano keys and smooth and subtle bass lines, as well as slight plucked strings that come together to create an atmosphere that the world can vibe to!
Also, we can’t ignore Kid’s fantastic chemistry across this track; he’s always killing it! (As his latest demand proves)
Although this is my first time discovering him, I can guarantee you this won’t be my last time covering him. From the sensual production to the dominating performances, this one has it all! Don’t believe me? Check for yourself below!
