And with this gargantuan tier roster comes an equally massive album that lives up to the hype it’s been generating in the last few weeks. This album showcases just how grand and powerful Flee Lord can be when he’s accompanied by some of the most original in the landscape and on his premium-type shit!
Across these 12 tracks, we hear some of the most compelling hip-hop instrumentals you’re bound to hear all year. It’s a mixture of classical, boom-bap, soul, jazz, funk— the whole nine yards. Each track has its own fusion and variations of each element to create 12 individual scores that come together to work as an album.
For example, we have the track -Honoring The Greats! This track is so fucking infectious, starting with that great spoken word snippet that evolved into this beat that has a combination of snapping jazz horns, plucked bass strings, and thudding drum patterns!
There’s also some distorted vocal harmonies and funky piano keys in the background that I absolutely adored!
Or we can look at the intro track -Coinless, with that classical meets soul vibe with those grand high-pitched strings, rhythmic drum beats, what sounds like some flute samples, and some plucked chords in the background that gave me a Daft Punk influence! Although this is a rather minimal track, it’s fucking infectious, man. This has that otherworldly feel to it that makes your mind wonder and imagine!
Hell, we can talk about the track -Residue which has this almost tribal feel to it! With those mysterious vocal harmonies in the background that’s combined with these intense/bare drums, light keys and some of the thickest drums I’ve heard in my life. There’s also a hint of strings in the background that I fucked with heavily. This is what I imagine music would sound like to me if I was on a tab of acid! It’s so trippy but in the best way possible!
This all to say, that the production is the definition of ‘S Tier’ it ain’t easy to get so many chefs in the kitchen and pull off a Michelin Star meal but that’s exactly what’s happened here!
Man, if I ever get tired of a Flee Lord verse, that’s the day I deserve to die. Because it ain’t an exaggeration to say he’s one of the best doing it period. He’s proven that time and time again over the years (even last year with that thing I reviewed) to now. He’s a man who prioritises innovation and consistency above all and you can hear it in the music itself.
Across this tape we hear Flee in PREACHER MODE. He’s not just simply ‘rapping’ he’s manifesting. He’s letting his heart and soul do the talking and in turn releasing some of the deepest and realest shit he’s ever said on top of a beat. It’s like he’s a man possessed with his penmanship. He’s never sounded more fluent, from his sharp intellect to his precision to his one-of-a-kind street poetry and power in his wordplay.
He sounds like a man on a mission, a man who’s using these 12 tracks to tell HIS story and not just another album for album’s sake. He wants the world to hear his thoughts, his opinions and his view on the world. He’s known as one of the kings of the grimy shit in the culture but he wants the same fans to know he’s a smart man and he’s using his influence, platform and intellect to create performances that will be remembered for a lifetime.
