Although you could say this man hits it out of the park monthly, I found this month specifically he’s gone harder than normal! From his ridiculous feature verse on the new Sabio Dub to the song with God Gotti and now this one! I know he’s had a few NARCO REMIXES in between those, but out of the ones I’ve heard, he’s been killing it in droves! So let’s talk about this new offering!
This is the brand-new EP by MC Gustavo Louis and Producer Drogy D, and to my knowledge, this is the first project I’ve heard with this duo as they come hot with a fresh 16 tracks that are based on COKE RAP as the title suggests!
When we discuss the production aspect, we see a score full of light yet groovy boom bap meets soulful offerings. Each track feels like its own specific atmosphere that comes together to create a soundtrack that is unique to anything I’ve heard Gustavo rap on yet!
Whether we are talking about the track -potty trained (which already has a hilarious premise), but on this track we have a combination of those old-school vocal harmonies that appear around every 10 seconds or so that’s placed next to these infectious guitar strings that are beautifully plucked!
There are some sharp chord progressions that loop around the track and some light bass chords that I can vaguely hear in the background and some rhythmic drum beats!
There’s the track -shine which is what kicks the whole EP off to begin with! On this one, we hear what starts off with a flute sample with some ambient sound that later evolves into this rather surreal song that combines elements of light jazz horns, thick bass, and more light flute with some kick-ass drums!
This song has a lot of mesmerising elements to it that I loved. It starts the EP theatrically because halfway through the beat switches into this more gritty and boom bap experience with thudding drums and delicate keys! Very smart to use this as the intro!
You can even discuss the track—looking at 4 Plugz— a very straightforward concept but one that hits as hard as a Clipse/Pusha-T track! From those gorgeous piano keys, heavy bass, mean mugging style drums that sound like bass drums being hit! This one has a rather melodically effective chorus by Gustavo!
As we get closer to the middle of the year, I’ve noticed a few things. One, it seems that Gustavo (at least on the handful I’ve heard and covered) has become more distinctive and formulated with his verses and performances. That is to say, although he’s maintaining his untouchable aura and energy, it sounds more professional and directed! More of a controlled chaos than an unbound one!
So on this EP, I hear his verses sound more layered and structured! From his smooth chorus executions to his more application of fluent flows, more constructively dense lyricism, and I feel a more wide sense of concepts and visual penmanship!
I feel I can get a stronger grasp of the things he’s talking about, the kind of situations he might have had to deal with in his life, or even just his puns and wordplay— it’s all hitting on a more concentrated level that I feel does his music that much more justice as a result! I noticed this the most strongly on his Sabio feature, and I’m not saying his music was bad before this month, but I definitely feel a switch-up that is making his overall performances that much stronger!
So, another solid EP dropped with one hell of a producer. Have you heard it yet? What’s your opinion on it? Let me know!
