(Apex Light)

Now, this is the kind of beat I love to see this guy on! I’ve literally heard him rap on every kind of sound, influence, and sample imaginable. From the most muddy raw atmospheres to the most experimental and original! And now he’s back on his smooth boom Bap shit, and this is the middle group I feel he works perfectly in!

So, this is the latest single by one of the most consistent MC’s in the game right now, ‘Here$ Johnny’, and features ‘Mr Skip’ on production and ‘YOUNG STADIX’ as the second MC on the track!

As far as the beat goes, I love it! It’s so bloody infectious and groovy. Right off the bat, I love the looping ‘Left, Right’ vocal snippets that sound like a drill sergeant saying them. After that, we have a more classical and soulful male vocal harmony on loop, subtlety in the background, as this light female voice also is heard ever so slightly angelically looping as well for a mere second and a half.

There’s a lot about this beat that screams cinematic and surreal energy. This is the kind of beat you could literally listen to for hours and never get sick of (And if you want, you are given the opportunity to do so, as the instrumental version comes with the single).

Regardless, this is a fantastic beat that perfectly complements Here$ Johnny and his frequent collaborator to go OFF on!

As expected, Johnny comes in hot and heavy with his trademark aggressive sonic running knee to the face of the audience as he rips apart this beat with his raw and rugged delivery, his vicious lyricism, and his destructive aura and rhythm that always sounds like he’s two seconds away from jumping out of your headphones to start something! It’s that no-nonsense, fuck what you say mentality that has made him such a household name in the underground!

Right alongside him is his partner in crime. The dynamic duo between Here$ Johnny and YOUNG STADIX has been well documented with past releases, and they further prove why their chemistry is among some of the best in the game right now!

Just like Johnny, he comes in with that ruthless energy, that undeniable charisma, and knock-your-block-off lyricism that has him damn near throw the dictionary at the beat with how well he utilises words, phrases, puns, and expressions! He’s the ultimate threat on a track, and working with such a phenomenal beat, he can do no wrong!

Overall, another fantastic showing by Here$ Johnny and company! For someone so consistent, he’s always on the money! Don’t sleep on this single or any of the previous!

(Scarred Hands & Stained Pages)

Man, it’s been WAY too long since I last reviewed the producer of this record. I was honoured enough to cover some of his stuff years before my website and even had an interview with him via Zoom, and now he’s back collaborating with one of my favourite MC’s of the underground! So let’s talk about it!

This is the latest collaboration between rapper G Fam Black and producer Bofaatbeatz, and together they drop a fresh 10 tracks featuring

-Kingdom Kome

-Lu Chin Chen

-Pryme Prolifik

– Aztec The Barfly

-OGBenGrimm

-Azariah

-P-Ro

-Barbaric

-Oblivious

-Sankofa

And if this tape has taught me anything, it’s that no one inherits the spirit and power of the old school like Bo Faat!

When this man is on the production, he’s able to encapsulate and bring to life the classic, vintage, crisp, and hard-hitting precision and quality of the early to mid-1990s with acts such as

-Naughty By Nature

-LL Cool J

-Ice Cube

-Gang Starr vibes that emphasise down-to-earth, gritty atmosphere while also providing larger-than-life instrumentation and grandiose sounds and aesthetics that make this not only a homage to the past era but also an originally crafted and designed piece of Hip Hop that showcases Bo’s incredible diversity, creativity, and masterful technique behind the beats!

When working with the monstrous MC like G Fam, there are certain sounds and beats that suit him best and highlight his unique and rare skills on the mic, and I feel Bo has constructed the perfect playlist for him to go off on; each instrumental pairs immaculately with G’s vicious and extreme performances, which makes this project even more impressive!

Speaking of the man himself. As I’ve said across multiple reviews, I’m always left shocked and surprised by G Fam’s aggressive approach to his delivery and flow on the mic. He’s the definition of ‘Extreme’; he makes 99% of the so-called ‘hardcore’ rappers sound childish in comparison.

When he spits bars on the track, it feels less like verses and more like vocal earthquakes jumping from beat to beat, destroying everything in its path! Pair that with lethal penmanship and powerful technique, and you have yourself a man who features all the skills to be THE force to be reckoned with in the industry!

Speaking of the current ‘industry’, the finale track (similar to the latest P-Ro X Mathias’ album) ends on a huge cypher-form track with all of the underground’s biggest names coming together as a collective to provide a final blow to close the album off.

Each artist delivers dope verses and impressive techniques and skills that showcase why they are some of the most talked-about talent out right now! G Fam and Bo definitely chose correctly for who should feature on this devastatingly dope cypher!

As expected. This collaboration project was beyond successful. The production was flawless, and as usual, G Fam provides his terrifying excellence on the vocal performances, adding to his ever-so-deadly discography!

(Tears In Your Eyes)

I’ll tell you one thing, seeing an album as smooth as this one brings tears to mine. It feels like the perfect ‘going away’ present for the listeners and die-hard fans. Although short in length, this one felt just that little bit more special than the rest! Let’s talk about it.

So, this is the latest record by mega producer Circa97, who this time around made a Beat Tape! Consisting of seven tracks, 14 minutes of content, and a producer feature in GialloPoint (how often do you see a beat maker feature on a beat tape?), anyway, with only a handful of tracks, this one has a certain level of intimacy that you don’t get from the others.

Right off the bat, I love the production style on this record. Why? Because it feels old-school! It feels classical and a representation of the golden era of music. This feels less of a ‘Hip Hop’ album and more just a ‘Classical Music Album’ with a Hip Hop twist.

The notes are gorgeous, the chords are riveting, and the overall instrumentation aspect is breathtaking to say the least!

If I had to pinpoint any of the seven tracks that feels most ‘Hip Hop’, it would be track three ‘Cold World’ featuring Giallo Point, but that’s a given considering it’s two producers in that field on one track!

But for the rest of the album, I can honestly say it just feels like a gorgeous piece of music that pays homage to the days of old. I want you to picture a 1900’s orchestral score. Think of all the glossy and shining production, the grand and cinematic musicians all playing in complete unison and synchronicity.

Think about the aura that would give off, the pure and organic atmosphere music of that caliber would create, and then I want you to try to picture that same energy in this beat tape. Although only under 15 minutes, it really does hit that way!

I’ve covered more than a handful of Circa97’s projects. I’ve heard him at his most muddy, I’ve heard him experiment with all kinds of different sounds, influences, and samples across all fields of music, and I’ve heard him create some of the greatest compilation records the underground has ever heard. And yet, we have never gotten this side of him (until now), and it’s a face I NEED the world to see!

Whether you’re a fan of beat tapes or not is irrelevant. This album goes beyond that! It goes beyond ‘Hip Hop’ but instead highlights the main key that keeps us all engaged and spiritually focused. QUALITY MUSIC!

(Life Kinda Different/Black Roses)

Today I have the incredible opportunity to not only discover a new dope artist but cover two singles at once! Only done this once before now, so let’s get into it!

This is the latest two singles by MC ‘LuAble’, with the first being

-Life Kinda Different: 3:01

-Black Roses: 2:13

Now two very different tracks for their own reasons! Starting with ‘Life Kinda Different’,

what I love about this one is its darker, more surreal overtones. You have those heavy bass plucked strings that thump in the background, and then you have subtly looped, is this vocal choir-style harmony that gives the track its ‘elegant’ nature.

I love how when these two main features are combined, it makes an almost ‘Art Hop’, early to mid-2000s underground era production with your

-Illogic

-Atmosphere

-Brother Ali-type atmospheres, the type of song that makes the listener contemplate life and forces the audience to think. I love production like this as it was my favourite era of hip hop.

As far as the rapping goes on this one. He has a fantastic combination between witty and braggadocio bars and personal, thinking-out-loud lines that sound like he’s just talking in the studio about what’s been going on in his life without actually writing traditional ‘bars’ down.

For example, in his second verse, how he goes ‘Told me get my tooth fixed, mm well maybe/going through some fucked-up shit yeah lately’

That’s an example (to me) of the man just bearing his private thoughts on the mic without worrying about traditional rap bars. But the genius is he seems to go back and forth between your standard written verses to these moments so effortlessly that it left me nothing short of impressed!

Now onto his second track ‘Black Roses’, man, this beat is almost the opposite of the first one! Instead of having a more introspective vibe, this feels straight out of the 90’s ‘A Tribe Called Quest’ era with those thick bass lines, those synth chords, and that fucking beautiful chorus groovy loop with that small snippet of some vocal sample. Man, that is a tight beat switch for the chorus!

This is the kind of beat you can just hear Q-Tip or De La Soul could go off on! This is pure ‘Jazz Rap’ era instrumental, and I could listen to this beat for weeks and never get sick of it! In fact, it’s already added to my personal playlist!

Now. For this song, LuAble is featured alongside Dskillz Harris, and these two remind me of a modern-day Q-Tip and Phife Dawg! Their chemistry is flawless! Both have incredible flow, infectious rhythm, with fun and witty wordplay and pen game.

Unlike the other single, there aren’t really ‘heartfelt’ or ‘personal’ lyrics to point out. This literally sounds like a tribute to that classic golden era. This track is just fun, groovy instrumentation mixed with passionate, light-hearted displays of bar fests that just make you happy to listen to!

Overall, I love these two singles because they showcase the strength of two different styles of production and lyricism. Definitely don’t sleep on these two tracks!

Shoutout to Dskillz Harris for production on these two singles!

(Rose Gold)

It’s already been quite a year for this man. After an incredible run in 2024 with many albums considered ‘Album Of The Year’, he’s back with his third offering of 2025 and no doubt a record many will speculate will be this year’s ‘Album Of The Year’, so let’s talk about it!

This is the latest collaboration album by underground legend CRIMEAPPLE and notorious producer DJ Skizz, and together they drop 12 songs with just under 40 minutes of content, with the likes of

-Estee Nack and -Lil Eto as the features!

Earlier this year, they did drop the single ‘Oro Rosa’, which had the culture buzzing, and now with the full course available, how does it fare? Well, in my opinion, this is CRIMEAPPLE’S strongest album of the year.

Starting with the production, DJ Skizz, who hasn’t been quiet himself, as I remember him dropping that collaboration project with Musalini in that dope record ‘The Pierre Hotel’, and now with this, he’s bringing his trademark organic instrumentation and theatrical production/execution that makes this record sound like the sonic equivalent of a holiday on a tropical island where the ocean is clear and the coconut trees plentiful, and the skies beautiful.

The biggest factor of this record is how gorgeous and authentic the instruments sound across this album. Doesn’t matter if we talk about the luscious strings, the subtle keys, those loud and powerful horns, or the traditional/crisp and well-executed Hip Hop Beats. Every aspect from the grand instrumentation to the skeletal rap production feels larger than life. It feels ‘luxury’ with a fresh atmospheric aura that sounds like paradise.

I had to listen to this album three times before I could review it specifically due to the fact I kept getting lost in the beauty and elegance of the production. My body and mind felt relaxed, and I was just soaking in the pure divine vibe of the record. That’s how powerful and beautiful this album sounds!

Now, onto the man himself. The man who has broken every expectation on him for the past few years now and across this album, paired with that lavish instrumentation, he’s determined to break new ground and show the culture why he really is ‘that guy’.

What’s interesting is, although the production is as gorgeous as it is, Crime hasn’t toned down his lyricism at all. It’s still street, drug bars with his trademark charismatic spin that only he can pull off.

He brings with him that untouchable flow where he can manipulate the beats for him to spit however and wherever he wants on the beat in his own ‘free form’ style and still come out perfect. It’s actually fitting he features Estee Nack on this album as he’s the king of that style and Crime shows his ability in that as well, and hearing them on the same track is heaven-sent!

His raw, natural aura and cadence on these tracks is infectious. He’s in no rush, he ain’t rapping on anyone’s time but his own. Always the one to be calm and collected on the songs, building his rhythm combined with his lethal yet surreal pacing and sharp penmanship, he’s showcasing his ‘all-rounder’ talents and, as I said above, I feel this is the best he’s sounded all year!

I could listen to this album for weeks on end and never get sick of it. The chemistry between these two is undeniable and, although we did get a record with them back in 2019, I hope we can get one more to finish off the trilogy!

(CRESCENTMOONMAGIK)

I haven’t been this excited by a new single drop in ages! This song features a producer who I honestly think is at the top of the list for best beat makers in the underground or in hip-hop period. He’s already produced ‘Infinite Wave’, my ‘Album Of The Year’ so far, and his track record last year spoke for itself. With the teasing of a new record, I’ve only got excitement and anticipation in my heart and soul, and in the meantime, we have this single! So let’s talk about it!

This is the brand new single by powerhouse producer BONEWESO and featuring one of the most underrated MC’s out right now ??? (The Hidden Character) and together they release this beautifully crafted single that defies all expectations!

Right off the fucking bat, we hear that breathtaking jazz instrumentation that gave me goosebumps as soon as it started and continued throughout the whole track. That divine loop with that high note finish towards the end only to come back to the basics of the loop is one of the most beautiful renditions of a sample I’ve heard in my life.

Bone Weso can do no wrong; the way he’s incorporated that instrumental over that skeletal boom Bap beat with the inclusion of those subtle piano keys just comes together in the most divine and powerful pieces of music I’ve heard in the past few years for real.

On to ???. The man who has been killing the game for the past few years, delivering some of the dopest feature verses the game has ever heard across multiple projects, but now he’s decided it’s his time to shine in the spotlight, and the game should be worried because he ain’t one to fuck with.

As usual, he drops his trademark in your face, raw, rough, and rugged delivery on the beat. His lethal pen game and grimy flow make him a force to be reckoned with. When he’s in his zone spitting bars, he can’t be stopped. This song is not even three minutes long, and yet we hear him drop verses, puns, double entendres, street bars, witty bars, and fluent mic work that it sounds like he hasn’t taken a breath the entire song.

Bar after bar after bar, this man doesn’t stop the whole track! Combined with that glorious instrumental, you have a recipe for a single that could rival any others to come out this year or any other!

I’ve literally listened to this track over 25x, no lie, and before night’s end, I’ll probably listen another 25x more. I can’t praise enough the efforts of both men and what they brought to the table, from that immaculate production to the lesson in expert pen game. These two have such a lethally strong chemistry that I fear will run the rest of the competition dry for the rest of the year!

(Best Among Equals)

We are so fucking back! Talking about two men who haven’t missed yet. They’ve spent the last few years collecting a discography most could only dream about. With banger after banger, they’ve collected the respect of peers and listeners alike, and now they are back to prove that they indeed are.

BEST AMONG EQUALS

So, new collaboration album between MC and artwork king P-Ro and powerhouse producer Mathias, and together they bring 12 new tracks with the likes of:

-G Fam Black

-Crotona P

-OGBenGrimm

-Aztech from Hybrid Thoughts

-Mo Rukuz

-Oblivious

-Lu Chin Chen

-I.N.F

-Lateb

What’s obvious right from the opening track is the quality behind the production. We ain’t talking about an amateur just starting his career or an unsure, unproven player who has yet to blow. Nah, we are talking about motherfucking Mathias! This man has made more hits than I’ve ever done in any sport, period.

Whether we are talking about the thick kick drums, the sharp snares, the elegant chord progression, the plucked strings, and beautiful jazz notes, or even the moments of pure filthy muddy boom Bap influence.

No matter what his soundscape is or what he is embracing across this project, he’s elevating, evolving, and rising all the instrumentation in question until they start to develop ‘Cinematic’ qualities with theatrical atmosphere and emphasis on ‘essence and aura’. It’s absolutely fantastic!

As spectacular as the production is, the MC’s give him a run for his money. There are so many duos and pairings you can mention for their chemistry and synchronicity, but these two have to be on top of that list.

You can tell Mathias is making exactly the production P-Ro and company need for the moments. There’s never an awkward phase or lacklustre performance or underwhelming scene, nothing at all. This is just pure familiarity and professionalism at its finest.

What makes every P-Ro record special is his authenticity, his down-to-earth nature, and his raw storytelling ability that makes each verse hit harder than most!

He has superb writing ability, infectious passion and enthusiasm combined with his crisp flow and pen game, and he’s the whole package.

Whether he’s rapping with savages like G Fam Black or in a cypher scenario like the final track, he’s always standing out, holding his own, and proving to his contemporaries and fans that he can rap alongside anyone and everyone and always spit fire!

Now, speaking of that finale track (which was teased earlier before the record dropped), but man, what a performance that was. In under four minutes, they fit in eight of the top MC’s out right now in one of the most explosive finales to an album in the last few years! This is a true audio statement. This is saying ‘we run this shit and we are here to stay’, and I loved every second of it.

Overall, another fantastic effort by everyone involved! Effortless production and dope MC work. I am not surprised in the slightest how this turned out!

(BEFORE THE ALBUM DROPS)

You know, the title of underrated gets thrown around a lot and yet very few are as worthy of the description as much as this man. With a consistent discography that combines incredible lyricism, storytelling, and cinematic production, he’s crafted himself into a real ‘underground king’ and he’s back to prove that to you all once again!

So, this is the latest Bandcamp album by legendary MC Hus Kingpin. For this project, he brings with him:

-Shaolin Luciano

-AWSME J

-Pete Rock

-Big Ghost Ltd

-Giallo Point

-Struggle Mike

-Sovren

-Crabskull

-DJ Manipulator on the production and

-Snotty

-Abe Linx

-Tully C

-Willie The Kid

-Smoovth

-RJ Payne

-Spideragod

-Lucky Seven

-K Burns

-NapsNdreds

And includes 11 tracks.

You’d be pretty hard-pressed to find a case where you have the list of producers as this album does and it not be a home run. What these nine beat makers bring to the table is diversity, masterful technique, and quality.

Each man brings their own strengths and skills to the table in their specific way. For example, when you have the track ‘SITUATIONS’ by the legendary Pete Rock. You can hear how beautifully he lays down that combination of delicate piano keys and that 90’s-influenced Hip Hop beat with those traditional beat breaks and subtle synth chords running through it.

Or when you have the track ‘DREAMS’ with the notorious Big Ghost Ltd and hear how he manipulates those crisp chords across that skeletal and raw boom Bap-inspired beat with that subtle use of that female vocal harmony, all that comes together for a darker and more sombre listen than most!

Even the track ‘RAVIOLI’ with the powerhouse Giallo Point. Where he utilises that more muddy, grimy boom Bap atmosphere combined with a touch of classical with those orchestral sound elements with those plucked strings looped in the foreground of the instrumental, bringing a more rough and rugged experience to the track.

This, to me, said is just three examples of different producers bringing their own ‘influence’ into the album, and with each man doing the same, you get a sonic platter of sounds and melodies that keep this album interesting and fun to listen to!

On top of the MC work. This roster is the definition of ‘The Best Of The Best’. You can’t beat this line-up, and with Hus being at the front of the pack, you can’t go wrong.

He comes through with this usual expressive, charismatic, and poetic persona across the beats that has made him stand out for years now.

His brand of lyricism and pen game makes him feel more like a distinguished author rather than a mere ‘rapper’, by the way he manipulates words to fit his narrative.

His smooth and fluent flow work, combined with his undeniable rhythm, makes him one of the best examples of an all-rounder the industry has.

He can set up a story narrative and make conceptual tracks as if it were effortless. The only man I can think of that shares the same level of skill would be ‘Billy Woods’. It’s an exclusive group that 99% of the game can’t enter.

Of course, as mentioned, he brought with him some of the best and brightest talents in the game as we speak, and none of them disappoint! They all bring their best foot forward and deliver some of the best verses I’ve heard all year!

If I had to choose two of my favourite feature verses on the album, they would have to be the ‘Spider Da God’s’ on track 6, ‘K. Burns’ on track 9, or ‘Snotty’ on the intro track!

But regardless, each man brought it! Not a weak sentence to be found, and each MC helped elevate this record to a whole new level!

Overall (not surprisingly), another solid release by the man with the perfect discography. The projection was perfect, as was the rapping performances! Don’t sleep on this one!

https://huskingpin.bandcamp.com/album/before-the-album-drops-digital-tape

(Deity Dope)

It’s been a minute since I last covered Hank Dope! I last covered his ‘Dopamine’ EP and since then he’s been on my radar as one of the rawest artists out, and he’s back with another addition to his ever-growing discography! So let’s talk about it!

So, new Hank Dope album featuring seven new tracks and twelve minutes of content with the rapper Outti as the only other MC assigned to three of the tracks on the project!

As per usual, no matter how short or long the album is, Hank always chooses the most muddy, theatrical, and cinematic music for his raps. We are talking the perfect blend of gritty, orchestral, immersive, rough, and beautifully crafted sounds in the game today.

In this twelve minutes, you have moments like ‘Mia Wallace’, which features those stunning choir-like vocal harmonies that give your body goosebumps accompanied by those synth chords subtly playing in the background!

Or even the track ‘Elixir’, which features foreign almost dessert-themed instruments with sounds you’d expect to hear from the movie ‘The Mummy’, with those eerie male chanting vocals mixed in with that traditional boom Bap beat!

The point is, with every Hank drop, you can expect these levels of surreal and atmospheric sounds that elevate the usual ‘boom Bap’ sound with larger beats and more powerful emphasis on the instruments and voice samples to give a more definitive and grand experience than you commonly use, which is also why Hank’s releases are so anticipated!

Now onto the man himself. If his production choices are cinematic, it’s a reflection of Hank and the storyteller that he is. He’s a street poet, who’s equally street and smart. He’s the furious styles of the underground. He’s the one to teach you wisdom but will equally bloody his Jordans if you try to step to him!

He has a strong sense of self. A killer energy, and dominant lyricism and lethal pen game that can rival the best of them! When he spits, he commands the room to take notice, and they do! What elevates this record further is the use of the feature MC ‘Outti’. They really hit off with their perfect chemistry and paired aggressive nature on the tracks!

This is the kind of synchronicity you’d want out of a duo. A pair that can match the others’ energy, passion, and ruthlessness on the songs, and considering he’s on three of them, it definitely makes for a compelling listen for each song he’s on!

Overall, for 12 minutes? This shit fucking goes HARD. Incredible production topped with even better rapping by both men involved! Definitely don’t want to sleep on this!

https://open.spotify.com/album/0uZyqTztIfiCBcza5ooZol?si=w-LkbRQJSHuZL3NTdE5otg

(Peony Blues 2)

Another new artist discovery! After almost 400 reviews done this year, I’m still finding myself discovering new artists I’ve never heard of! That’s the beauty of the underground! So let’s talk about it!

This is the latest record by MC TuNe B. Alongside him, he has the following producers:

-Luke Mackenzie

-BMG Castro

-Sekaniii000

-Simensez

-Prod 4_Head

-jesusmagazines

-tiredassab

-prodsoul_

-IRØNSKULL

-Okweapons

-prodghostttt

-flousenn

-prodbyscutt

-ST3R30

-Chas4y

-Koroboiii

And features guests on the tracks:

-willyynova

-forgetgeeze

-milehin

And I gotta say, despite the huge roster of producers on this record, this thing is fucking smooth. This is the kind of rap music I spent my teen years listening to more than 15 years ago, and it makes me happy to know this type of art isn’t dead!

This sound reminds me of the old-school underground lo-fi/ambient/experimental/art rap that you’d expect from the likes of:

-Open Mike Eagle

-Milo

-Earl Sweatshirt

-Quelle Chris

Real pioneers of that ‘alternative’ vibe era rap with the saturated production and ASMR-adjacent instrumentation and outer-worldly atmosphere and soundscape. This is the kind of production I’d listen to while I was getting high or just wanted a space to think, let my mind wander, and this type of music I find has a way of expanding your mind and making thinking a lot easier and more profound than with regular types of music.

Into the rapping side of things, I really gravitated towards this guy because he reminds me of a young Earl Sweatshirt or a combination of Earl and Billy Woods. He has this equal part introspective poetry and dope/lethal bars that come together for this amazing chemistry that most MC’s don’t have.

His ‘freelance’ style of rapping is unique and fits this production perfectly. It’s engaging, entertaining, and most of all, original. He doesn’t sound like a rapper writing words on paper but more a man thinking out loud in a studio that just happens to be recording!

I love how his lyricism and flow just effortlessly glide through this various soundscape with ease. He knows how to manipulate and devour the beats to ensure the best possible outcome for his original wordplay and delivery. His smooth and unbothered cadence is infectious to hear and makes his verses that much more interesting and powerful.

Overall, a fantastic effort by everyone involved! It’s definitely an album they can say is original to them and can’t be replicated!
