(Mid Death Crisis)

It’s that exciting time of the year, a new Wednesday 13 album! The man/band I’ve been following for the past 17 years of my life and who I continue replaying in my adulthood, and they are now back and let’s get into it!

So, this one is 12 songs and 43 minutes in length, and right off the bat, you can tell with that haunting intro that this one will be ‘heavier’ than the others, bringing back the 2019 ‘Skeletons’ feel and inspiration with the leaning towards ‘Heavy Metal’ as a base more than the ‘Punk’ side of things, and of course, across the board, you have fans who share opinions on which era of Wednesday they prefer, but regardless, it’s his quality and consistent creativity in the ‘Horror Punk’ subgenre that we all gravitate towards and look forward to, and this release is no different!

Interestingly, this album features lead singer of Glam Metal band ‘Faster Pussycat’ on track 5, which offers an interesting switch of pace for the band’s signature sound!

Aside from there, this project is a lot more methodical and surreal in its pacing. You can feel every guitar string, every thud of the drums, and when they kick off into a pattern, your whole body feels the rhythm and plays along!

There’s a track on here ‘Rotting Away’ which gives me a twist spin on ‘Bad Things’, with the lyrical matter feeling very similar, and just like the former track, has an anthem-like quality to it, which is badass!

Wednesday himself hasn’t lost a single touch since his 2022 album ‘Horrifier’. In the span of three years, he sounds as solid as he ever has. He could very well be a vampire who doesn’t age, which would honestly explain a lot about his longevity and career so far. He doesn’t look different from his days in ‘Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13’ days, and he just seems to be getting better with age!

If I had to choose a favourite track, it would have to be ‘Decapitation’ for the sole reason that I’m an open-minded fan of his more punk-heavy releases, and this one fits the bill completely! Not to say the album is bad at all, but this one gets my gears going, and it has another strong anthem filled with a chorus I’m sure I’ll get weird looks for accidentally being caught lip-syncing the words under my breath.

Final verdict: this album is as expected BADASS. It delivers on all fronts with a mix of sounds for every type of Wednesday Era fan, and it’s another fun adventure from start to finish!

(Wrekless Art 2)

Time for the discovery of two new, fresh artists. I once again find myself discovering new artists, and with the acclaim and buzz they are getting on social media, I knew this was one I had to cover, and so let’s talk about it!

This is a collaboration album between rapper Mic Picasso and producer Sean Wrekless, and together they bring 17 tracks and over 40 minutes of content! Featuring the likes of:

-Aida

-Ja’king the Divine

-SageInfininite

-Ayo The Don

-True Cipher

-X-Yle

And starting with the production by Sean. The main thing that caught my attention was his ability to create a range of hypnotic, emotional, and surreal beats and loops that really capture the listener’s attention.

These don’t sound like your run-of-the-mill mainstream or underground beats, rather a collection of well-orchestrated sonic statements filled with intricate and skeletal but experimental at the same time.

I love the way he uses the basics to create magic. You can hear the grand keys and notes, the lavish chords and string progressions, as well as the mastery of technique to make every single song feel like it took 20 years to make! The elegance just radiates off it!

He provides the production in full colour for Mic the Picasso to go off on, and in his bold expression of artsy sets, he sets the foundation for his whole record!

Now, onto Mic. The man who so boldly names himself after the iconic legend. But does the MC mic hold up? I’m going to say yes.

What is obvious from the first track is the fact that he’s bringing a combination of raw and gritty rhymes combined with artistically witty and introspective wordplay that brings out a dual side of him that showcases the equal parts ‘rough and rugged’ and ‘intelligent and deep’.

When it comes to his techniques, there’s nothing to complain about; he has smooth and fluent flow, lethal and powerful wordplay with precise timing and rhythm, as well as a natural flair with his charisma, infectious energy, and passion for the game, which you can hear in every line!

Even working with his contemporary features, he still knows how to maintain his composure and stand strong as the main MC of the record, keeping the pace and aura of what got him to this point alive!

All in all, a fantastic display of chemistry between the artist, producer, and features, and I will definitely be on the lookout for these two in the future!

Knock Knock Knock*

(Door Opens)

Corban: My brother! What’s up, bro! So fucking psyched you can make it!

;Am I at the right place? I received a secret RSVP for a

-Serpent Tongue Award Ceremony, is this the right address?

: You damn right it is! Come on in! You were the last person to wait on, now we can officially start the process!

(Corban Gets up on Stage)

Now. The reason I hand-picked each and every one of you here tonight is because you all are some of the most open-minded and honest music journalists and addicts in the game right now, and I have a secret project to unveil in front of your eyes, a piece of music so left-field and extraordinary that it will make you change the way you feel, think, and SEE music in the foreseeable future! By a man you all recognise for his tough, unforgiving beat structures who has decided to try a new lane, and trust me guys, after this, you’ll be pulling the trigger to your own sonic knowledge!

We have, GRAPHWIZE (Yes, the same OG producer who you know most recently from Bub Styles and the works), but this time around, he’s working alongside a

(A moment of silence falls across the room for suspense effect)

A FUCKING FASHION DESIGNER!! Can you fucking believe that shit!

*Massive gasps and claps all around*

This five-track EP is unlike anything you’ve heard in your life. Come together by two minds of various art forms for your ears and mine. So what am I waiting for? Are you ready to hear the EP? Are you fucking ready to experience divinity? One, Two, Three AND IT’S LIVE

(Room is silent, in pure thought and reminiscent of transparency)

Corban: So, do we have any questions for the artist?

Man 1: Yes, I do. So, Graph, may I ask, what inspired the change in lane? And why?

Graph: Yeah, man, it’s been a trip in and a half. Don’t get me wrong, I still fuck with that grime/underground hip-hop shit hard. I won’t ever turn my back on that. It’s just I felt like I wanted something new, something fresh, and what’s more fitting to that answer than working with a fashion designer?

Woman 1: May I ask, (love the EP first off) but what was it like working alongside VFOS and how does it compare to working with other ‘music artists in the industry?’

Graph: Solid question, thanks for that. So you gotta understand that for this sonic experience, we had to find a common ground between ‘fashion’ and ‘music’, and that’s not often mixed together to the extent we went. So I’ll admit it took a bit of back and forth, going back to the drawing board and discussing what works here and there and what he loved vs what I loved. And unlike two music heads who understood the industry, we are wired differently and have more ‘common ground’.

But here, it takes a lot of open-minded thinking and understanding by both parties by default to make it work, and I gotta say, although tough at times, it was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve done yet in my career.

Man 2: Final question, can you see yourself doing another expedition of this magnitude anytime soon?

Graph. Haha, I don’t know, man. I can’t guarantee anything yet as it was just freshly completed, and I do enjoy the end process of relaxing afterwards, but let’s just say ‘never say never’, man.

Corban: Well that’s the end of the special RSVP listening party. I told you, you’d never be the same afterwards! Make sure you keep updated with ‘The Serpent Tongue’ thank you to our guests Graph and VFOS and until next time. See you all fucking later

Serpent tongue OUT!

(Culture Pop) Side B

It hasn’t even been 24 hours since I last reviewed a Penlordz project. Actually, the last time I spoke with the boys to send them my ‘INTRICATE DETAILS 2’ review, I said in that review at the end, ‘I guarantee this won’t be the last Penlordz review I’ll have to do this month alone,’ and then I found this in my new releases on Spotify. So let’s talk about it!

We have a sequel record from 2024, a Side B with Fam Ross and DJ Mello Rasheed. With production from Da Grand Hova and features eight new tracks with just under 20 minutes of content, with only one feature being the usual suspect, Audio Messiah.

Right off the bat with that opening track, we have what sounds like a spoken narrative by some strong preacher or someone with high authority speaking on race and ethnicity. It’s a strong way to start the album and brings a level of confidence and enthusiasm to the project going forward, and that’s where the album really starts!

The production on this thing is actually completely different than the album just 24 hours prior! Gone is that relaxing and harmonic sounds, and in are the more introspective, gritty, and expressive sounds that engineer a ‘strong-willed’ atmosphere to the record.

Across this one, the instruments themselves from the hip-hop beats, the piano keys, to the tribal instrumentation on tracks like ‘OOOHH BABY,’ all of it sounds alive, it sounds colourful and vibrant as if they are sentient beings that have the ability to come to life when being utilised or held. These boys literally breathe soul into the air and bring to tape some of the most exciting and vivid production we’ve had all year! This sounds less like an EP and more like a theatrical release right in front of my ears as I lie back, letting my imagination go wild!

When we get into Fam Ross, as just mentioned, he’s putting his ‘Rest mode’ bars to the side for the moment and reawakening his more awake and ready side of him with bars that feature more energy, intensity, and animation to his words that make him feel like he’s just taken a few energy drinks before the studio sessions!

He sounds the most lively than he has in a minute! You can hear his witty and slick bars; his braggadocios side is coming out a tad bit towards the end (which isn’t a bad thing) but a rare thing to hear from the Penlordz. I’m so used to them being the thinkers and analysis heavy MC’s so to hear them on their ‘we the best shit’ gotta admit is kind of mind-blowing! I love it.

His lyrics feature a level of grit to them, his swagger on a new dose of aura, and his flow is smooth and breezy; he ain’t here to be worried or concerned about anything or anyone; he’s just here to slap it in the face of the haters, just because he’s ‘Mr Nice Guy’. 9/10 doesn’t mean he won’t reveal that 1% and remind the game why he and the other Penlordz could take out anyone in the game if they wanted to!

Once again, another killer project. It’s insane that within 48 hours we can have two completely different sides of Fam Ross, and it’s that level of diversity that adds to their ever-growing list of achievements to keep them in the GOAT conversation!

(Grime & Glamour)

The last time we checked in, one Supreme Cerebral was back in January with his AOTY contender with ‘Son Of Hannibal’ featuring Swab. I don’t even remember if I wrote that under Raw Side Hip Hop or Serpent Tongue Reviews, but nevertheless, he made a strong statement early on and is back to shake up the industry again! So let’s talk about it!

So this time around, we have the collaboration of Supreme Cerebral and Macapella (someone who is new to me), but no doubt will be dope as they release a collection of 11 songs with 32 minutes of run time. Featuring the likes of:

-Hus Kingpin

-Jamil Honesty

-DJ TMB

-Ralphiiee Reese

-Yolanda Sargent

-Eloh Kush

And with this army of veterans behind him, he’s sure not to lose, and I can tell you now if his first 2025 instalment blew you away, then you ain’t ready for this one.

Let’s start with the production because what Macapella did that I honestly love is using such common and often used elements of Hip Hop like Grime and Boom Bap and somehow elevates them to a new cinematic and rich frequency that feels like a classical Hip Hop renaissance.

I love his use of long and sharp chord progressions and crisp productions such as the opening track.

Or even how he utilises those angelic piano keys alongside that heavy bass beat to create this surreal atmosphere that makes the listener feel goosebumps all over their body and soul, and it legitimately makes you feel as if you’ve just gotten sober once the track is over! It’s that fucking powerful.

If I had to name my favourite beat on the album, it would have to be the song ‘Dart Gallery’, and it’s gorgeously done with the execution of female choir vocal loops, those synth-sounding chords in the background with that ruthless and crisp boom Bap beat that feels like a sonic punch in the face, and I love everything about it!

This album feels Dolby Atmos in quality; it feels as if they were able to sneak in cinema-level speakers into your headphones to listen to this one properly. I have quality headphones, but I’ve never heard an album sound this grand or clear on Spotify before. I can’t imagine how it must sound on Bandcamp, but I’m telling you this ain’t any normal album; based on just the sound mastery alone, this thing has to be the best-produced album of the year so far!

Supreme, the man of the half hour. He’s been a force to be reckoned with for years now, with the world watching him grow and sharpen his skills, and now across this project, he’s letting all his experience and passion shine out and showcase his best self. It’s a blessing to the fans but a nightmare to the other MC’s out there!

His trademark energetic and rough-around-the-edges vocal tones tremble across the beats, causing an earthquake with each word spit, blowing all the competition away with his tsunami-strong flow and burning the world around him with his fire pen game.

He’s one of those guys that just has that ‘it factor’ when rapping. The one of a generation MC where he speaks, and EVERYONE listens. He commands a room and makes sure the audience takes notice and doesn’t let go until he says what he came to say, and that’s why he’s commanded so much love and respect in the game because of these qualities!

As mentioned, he’s coming with a group of lyrical killers who could easily storm through any and all competitions by themselves, but together they come and bring a level of excellence and power that we haven’t seen much of this year at all! They all brought their A game to match Cerebrals’ intensity and dynamic influence, and they do their best to match.

To say this album is amazing is the understatement of the year. He came into 2025 with an AOTY contender, and once again, he follows suit with another AOTY. His chemistry with Macapella is one of the best we’ve seen yet!

(Play For Keeps)

Back again to cover my artist of the first quarter of 2025! The man who reigned terror on the game with album after album, and now after a short break and taking his foot off the throats for a minute, King Kaine is back and the foot is pressed firmly back on, and he ain’t here to be at the back of the line; he’s leaving right where he left off!

So, this is a new eight-track record with 24 minutes featuring production by

-The Stand Outs

-Ghost Dave

-Hobgoblin

-Soul LXRD

-Pecue Quinn

-VV Stears

-SH4MEL

-Usual Suspects

And cuts by the legendary Swab! When you combine these names together, you have a diverse project that showcases some of the most expert and interesting sounds the year has shown so far!

Whether you’re talking about the opening track ‘Crystal Ball’ with its NES-style game intro soundtrack that evolves into a classical loop beat with a slight snippet of female vocal that sounds like she’s gasping!

Or maybe we can talk about the track ‘Eddie’ with those organ-sounding piano keys in a fancy loop which sounds like a haunted house/classical composition with again more vocal snippets to give it that extra X-factor!

Hell, if you really want, you can talk about the track ‘That Feel’ which features smooth, harmonious, and gorgeous strings that sound almost folkish in the modern rap era way. If medieval folk ASMR meets 2020’s hip-hip, you’d get this sound, and it’s fucking awesome.

Did you see how easily I could paint that picture in your mind of his sounds? That’s the first three tracks! And I’m going to let the listeners listen for themselves to hear how dope the project is, but the point is, he’s utilising these names in the best way possible to create not only a dope and infectious atmosphere but also certain lanes sonically he hasn’t travelled to before! It’s a win-win situation for the fans and Eddie, and this level of risk-taking is what keeps him fresh and interesting!

If you thought the beats were tight (they are), but Eddie definitely does them justice. His trademark in-your-face and ruthless style, methodical pace, and studio cadence make him a constant problem in the game.

He comes through with that vicious lyricism and legal pen game that leaves paper melting from the words and bars he writes down! His flow is always pinpoint accurate, and his verses are so versatile and powerful that he can go bar for bar with absolutely anyone in the game!

Across this project, he’s accompanied by

-Flee Lord,

Which is a dope choice in my opinion, keeping the features rare and providing the listener with not only a dope solo album but also shows to the fans that he doesn’t need features to help carry a record and he’s more than capable of doing it all on his own! Also, shoutout to Flee Lord for his dope verse as expected!

Nothing but banger after banger on this one. Technically, since this is his third album of the year, this can be his 3 Peat! Give him all the rings because he’s earned them! Move over MJ, now it’s the EK era!

(INTRICATE DETAILS 2)

The Penlordz have to be vampires. Because there’s no way they can sleep. I refuse to believe that they do; they have the consistency rate higher than any collective period. So once again, let’s talk about it!

So, this is an album by the Penlordz. On the album, it does say officially Fam Ross and Arsinel, but Audio Messiah is featured throughout, so fuck it, I’ll just regard it as a trio album!

Across this album, we have production by Worldwide Culture, someone who I haven’t heard of until right now, but if he’s rocking with the crew, then I know he’s gotta be dope, and he is!

Across these 12 tracks, we have the lordz reinforcing the more ‘melodic and harmonic’ production style like we saw on the previous project ‘PenLordz 4.’ A lot of similar vibes across the board!

What we see worldwide accomplishing on this one is a surreal and atmospheric vibe that captures the essence of harmonic, angelic, and transcendent music that puts the listener in a state of relaxation and comfort while listening to one of the smoothest and dopest albums of April!

Right from the first intro track, we hear that calming and mystical/vibrant setting sit in, and that same feel continues throughout the rest of the project.

Although new to me, he’s definitely impressed me enough to warrant further anticipation for any and all future drops to come!

Now, onto my favourite trio going right now. As per usual, these guys can’t miss. They are at that point now where they share the same thoughts and ideas, the same energy, the same fucking blood runs through all 3 at this point, and they are 3 in one (literally).

They haven’t missed a step in at least 10 projects ago, and their god-tier chemistry runs like water. They always have that thinking man’s lyricism, and their wordplay and penmanship are, of course, brilliant as their collective name suggests!

Another thing I love about Penlordz is how they take their time with every line they deliver. They ain’t in this to rush or be a fake chopper or say a lot of words that don’t mean shit, they are here to spit knowledge, encourage self-awareness and spit straight to the point, dope and down-to-earth bars to prove that you don’t need all these gimmicks or flashy things or fake viral videos to get over just honest, hard-working men who have perfected their craft and that’s what we are seeing here.

This definitely won’t be the last time I talk Penlordz this month alone, probably, but once again they hit the nail on the head alongside producer Worldwide and I hope we see future collaborations with them!

(Minimansiondust Vol 1)

I’m in that Estee vibe right now, and so I figured I’d do a deep dive on his discography and cover his ‘Minimansiondust’ series, of course, starting from Vol 1. So, let’s get to it!

This first volume came out in 2017, almost 10 years ago now, and was handled by Mr. Rose on the production! Featuring the likes of:

-Al Divino

-Codenine

-Rosati

-Chronic Tone

-Recognize Ali

And these names help breathe life into this project that helped innovate and kick-start the career of Estee to the powerhouse he is today.

Right off the bat, the production by Rose is unlike anything I’ve heard him on prior.

It’s not that grimy or raw as he’s usually on. In fact, it’s quite soulful and smooth with beautiful instrumentation, harmonic vocals, and rich, colorful samples that sound pleasant and organic in execution.

From the opening song with those gorgeous notes playing in the forefront and then featuring Nack’s charismatic bars, which flow as fluently as the beat.

From there, we just get even more well-produced instrumentals by Mr. Rose, who knows exactly how to set up a certain vibe, and in this case, that vibe is ‘surreal’ and ‘atmospheric,’ making you forget all your troubles and just sit back and enjoy a dope hip-hop album!

Although only 25 minutes in length, the way Mr. Rose masterfully designed the sounds and rhythm across the 10 tracks is proof of real intelligence and technique across the project!

Speaking of Estee, the man of the hour. Although he’s rapping on unfamiliar territory (at least to me) and a lot more mellow sounds than usual, he’s still rapping his ass off and providing his signature ruthless, passionate, and raw style that he’s only evolved in the present day!

As usual, his flow is untouchable, his lyricism is witty and street smart, and his pen game feels so natural it’s as if he doesn’t write at all! As if he just spits everything off the top of his head and just uses his soul and heart to give his extraordinary performances and memorable adlibs and singing passages!

Whether you talk about his most present album or his early discography, it’s clear he was the man his day one!

(Triple Black Diamonds 2)

When you think of killer duos in the underground, nah, fuck that in the whole game, who do you think of? I guarantee on most people’s mouths it would be Al Divino and Estee Nack.

These two have revolutionised the game in a way no one else has. The moves they are making in today’s climate are untouchable, and I feel it’s only appropriate that I take a trip down memory lane to provide context (for those who need it) on why these two are the ones right now.

So, this is a release from 2022 featuring both Al and Estee on the mic. But on production, we have a whole list of names such as:

-EWONEE

-Al Divino

-FutureWave

-DJ Mastamind

-LOMAN

-NO FACE

-PLAZABO

-GRAYMATTER

And if I had to describe what I love most about this duo and what keeps them memorable is their level of chaos. Each release with them included features what sounds like a sonic tornado storm of crazy instrumentals and wild samples and sporadic vocal lines and explosions of verses; it’s just an unpredictable time with every listening experience, and that is unique to just them.

It never feels forced or ‘put on’ by these two; they aren’t trying to be recognised as ‘noise or experimental’ artists; they just are that creatively talented that they do what they want, when they want, and it’s that level of rebellious behaviour within the industry that makes them such a force to be reckoned with.

Of course, you can’t ask for a better back-and-forth than between Estee and Al. They know each other so well, and at this point, I feel they share the same mind, so it’s always perfect flow and energy that they could probably go for hours on end and never stop.

Whether you’re talking about Estee’s ‘talking’ style rapping where it’s hard to believe he even writes down anything or you’re talking about Al’s gritty and deep/raw voice spreading his lyrical poison on the tracks, they are each other’s Ying and Yang, and there’s no duo out there that can match their level of chemistry and intensity.

As far as the production goes, it’s as wild and batshit as you’ve ever heard them. No better example of this than on the song ‘Credit Union Computer Glitch’ with that droning loop beat that just hypnotises the audience and features not only a fantastic back and forth by the pair but the most insane performance of Ad-libs and vocal performance I’ve heard ever by either of them.

No matter how many times I listen to this track, it blows me away. This is the energy I was talking about above! You can’t make this up; this is pure organic.

The whole record is just as original and ridiculous in all the best ways possible; you can guarantee never a boring experience with these two, and the selection of producers performed the assessment well, not to disappoint!

If you’re new to Estee and Al (like I was just a few years ago), then definitely check this one out to understand why they are the most impressive and important duo in the game right now!

(Five O’ Clock Tea With Bricktop)

It’s been a minute since I covered a Hobgoblin release. Must have been January the last time I did, and now it’s time I get back on his vibe! This time with new artists, so let’s talk about it!

This is the latest collaboration between rapper ‘Doza The Drum Dealer’ and producer ‘Hobgoblin’, and together they release 10 tracks with just under half an hour of content, with 26 minutes. Featuring the likes of:

-Mar

-Kaeson Skrilla

-Osvn

-Bearsnchills

-Dax Mpire

-Ark Medina

-Innocent?

-D. Goynz

-Skanks The Rap Martyr

And with this group of underground maniacs really to knock the block off anyone who tries to talk shit in the game, we have a record that is not only well done but has the edge to keep all fakers away.

Starting with the production. It’s beyond well documented the quality and expertise of Hobgoblin; he’s more than earned his spot in the greatest underground workers going, and you can be sure that if his name is on the album, then it’s going to be a banger, and this one is no exception!

We have him utilising a theatrical style atmosphere featuring UK Grime Boom Bap with entertaining film/show snippets throughout to give the project more of a ‘cinematic’ vibe.

Each beat has that larger-than-life, rough around the edges, and crisp texture to it that makes the listeners make that scrunched-up stink face at the incredibly raw and cold-blooded beats that make Hob a household name to begin with!

When he wants to go smooth, he’ll out-smooth the smoothest producer you know. But when he wants to go grimy? He’ll be the king of that shit, knocking off all your favourites.

Onto Doza. A man who is new to me, but after this, I guarantee he won’t be ever again. I was more than impressed with his honest, in-your-face, and bare rap style. He ain’t worried about that dumb, fake shit that all the fakes use to get views or reactions; he’s a dope rapper, and that’s what he’s doing on this one.

His flow is strong and sharp, his lyricism even more so. He makes sure each word he says lands with more ferocity than a sabertooth tiger on cocaine! His lyrical claws dig into all his contemporaries and leave them all bloody corpses fighting for breath!

Across this one, he brought with him equally skilled predators who smell blood and go for the kill. They all contribute to elevating the bloodthirsty aura of this record and leave no doubt who the illest in the game are right now!

Do I need to elaborate? This shit is DOPE.

-Deadly

-Ominous

-Phenomenal

-Extraordinary

And I’m not sure which duo could do it better!
