There will never be a day I’m alive where I won’t be excited for a new drop by this man. I consider him alongside only one other to be the front runners of the new generation of supreme lyricists in the underground and now he’s back with a EP that’s nothing but pure rhymes that prove why I consider him so highly! Let’s talk about it!
This is the brand new EP by MC’s Thought Provokah & Bengie with Production from Immortal Budda and together they drop a 5 track record that is every bit as satisfactory as I expected it to me!
Let’s start with the production. Although I’ve only had small exposure to Immortal Budda I understand the influence and strength he has in the culture and just how dope he can be when he locks in and that’s exactly what he does for this one!
On track one -Spread Love we have a literal ‘thought provoking’ instrumental that has a spacey effect to it combined with Jazz. You’ve got those elegant chord progressions combined with those beautiful Jazz Horns and rhythmic drum patterns that all come together to make a beat that’s reminiscent to the 2000’s underground of names such as -Illogic -Slug etc
On track two -Keep Still we hear a beat that takes up back to the 90’s traditional Hip Hop route with a bunch of cuts and scratches combined with some light and delicate piano keys, skeletal drums and subtle bass lines that all come together to pay homage to the old school era!
On track three -Premier Gurus we take a more in depth and infectious approach to the 90’s with a beat that’s so fucking groovy it made me wanna move my body immediately! This is a track combined with those high strung strings, mesmerising plucked bass and heavy handed drums that make you feel like your in a club in the 90’s with a bottle of Hennessy about to mean mug your surroundings while thudding your head! The Funk on this track is unmatched!
On track four -Hip Hop Fiends we take a more intimate approach to the track with a mellow instrumental that features a collection of delicate piano keys, traditional hip hop drum beats and very subtlety in the background you hear a glimpse of bass strings!
There’s also a light usage of cuts and scratches to give this song an extra layer of sonic texture and rhythm!
On the finale track -Witha we are taken back to a more atmospheric level track that I found rather interesting. The blend of those background Jazz horns, deep and echoing key executions and up front drums! Another minimal track but there’s a version vibe about this one that feels mysterious in its layout and structure!
Now, I can’t say I have much (or possibly any) experience with Bengie) but I can speak till I’m blue in the face about my appreciation and love for Thought. He is a man who has continuously surprised me with his depth of lyricism, incredible vocabulary and the way he’s able to articulate and structure his verses in a way that sounds purely natural and mesmerising to listen to! He’s a grand author with enough talent to outshine anyone in the game and he’s doing that exact thing here on this EP!
His trademark elite penmanship and performance shines across these 5 tracks with immaculate wordplay, flow manipulation and attention to detail. Every verse he spits feels like a miniature novel of epic proportions. What he’s able to accomplish and the substance he’s able to flesh out across these individual verses is more then most can hope to achieve on a whole album!
What’s surprising to me is the fact the MC Bengie was able to compete verbally toe to toe with one of the modern day greats! I admit I could just be oblivious to this man and he’s been killing it at this pace for a minute but since I’m not familiar with him I can’t help but be blown away!
This man just like Thought showcases his own intelligence, penmanship and wordplay that exceeds most! With a smooth flow and a structure that makes his every word stand out as if it’s shining gold!
The two of them have chemistry that is solid, fluent and powerful together! Each man trusting the other to kill the next verse and matching characteristics and studio cadences that make them a duo to be reckoned with! An incredible showing by both men!
If you ain’t on this wave, then what wave are you on? Two men bringing the importance of real lyricism back to the culture with incredible production to match! This is one of the record books and I hope we can all purchase the link and support the artist below!
