When I saw that these two had come together for a track, it was only instinct that I had to tune in and cover it! Easily two of my favourite MC’s in the underground, and with a three-minute track? Nah, this is the shit you gotta be tuned into! (And so I am), so let’s talk about it!
Brand new track by the two powerhouses, Mondo Slade and 067 Red. Both men I discovered last year, and I haven’t looked back since. This track is produced byRan, The Scientist, and together they come to deliver verses that prove the narrative of the song title. For some, that would be a bad joke, but to these two? There’s no reason why it couldn’t be true! Let’s talk about why!
Firstly, if we’re talking about the performances, as I just said, you have two of the dopest in-house deciding to leave all the other competition as sonic roadkill when they drive through! We have Mondo Slade starting with his iconic combination of brash meets complexity. Spitting his bars at a fast-paced rate with sharp lyricism, smooth flow, and a breezy rhythm that makes him such a unique threat in the game because he can utilise so many different areas as an MC that it makes most others look lacklustre in comparison!
But one of those men isn’t 067! He’s one of the rare few who can keep up and put up. He comes strong with an equally effective fast-paced game with his classic raspy voice that makes him an instantly recognisable name in the game. He has that in-your-face, brash, and in the forefront of the beats type performances that makes you feel like you’re in the room with him!
Matching pen for pen with Mondo, he confidently closes the latter half of the song with a dominant showcase of wordplay and cadence!
Of course, both of them ain’t rapping acapella. They are accompanied by the dope beatmaker Ran, who makes one of the most compelling and smoothest beats I’ve heard in a minute! I love how looped yet powerful the track is
You’ve got the two different vocal harmonies from the choir aspect to the actual singing chopped and cut while the choir aspect is continuously looped in the main beat! That’s accomplished with some rhythmic bass and some deep strings that come together for a masterfully crafted instrumental that’s mainly stripped back but effective nonetheless!
This is one of those beats I’ve heard 10x already and on my 11th while writing this. Even though there aren’t many layers to it, what is there is done to such a magnificent extent that it’s coming across magical. Soul meets ambient! I also love that final segment towards the end with those gorgeous keys that help close the track up! What a smart addition to the song.
As far as singles go, this is the one to beat in May! Can any other one come close to this? I doubt it. Why? Because you’re dealing with two of
