So, last time we discussed this artist, I touched on the subject of the proper use of the ‘EP’ and how it was originally designed for artists or bands to test out new ideas and stylistic choices that they didn’t want to risk a full-length over to gauge the audience’s reaction! He did exactly that last time, and once again, I feel he’s done the right thing and decided to use that style to show off his creative side! So let’s talk about it!
This is the latest EP project by MC and producer -CboiDaSauceGod. This time it’s a connection of five tracks and 14 minutes worth of content. If we want to start with the production side of things, we can go track for track.
-FWM, which rides away, hits you with that ambient trap feel with that progressive motion of sound at the start combined with that iconic sound sample ‘Damn son, where did you find this?’ As this track evolves into this hypersonic fusion of trap and tri-hop signatures that come together to create an instrumental that gives the illusion of consistent elevation in pitch without it being the case, very clever design!
-i4i, we hear what can be described as a natural sequel and continuation of the first track with what sounds like MySpace era hip-hop with those synth-style chords in two different layers, one in the background, the other in a continuous key rhythm with some basic drum beats that help level this track to the ground!
If anything, this beat reminds me of something the legendary -Viper would make. I wonder if that’s an inspiration?
-MAGIC, we have a more heavier and louder track than the rest so far. With a similar speed and lax in with some sharp synth chords combined with sickening bass chords and engulfing drums that feel consumed by the rest of the instrumentation! I love those sharp synths the most! You can’t help but let it take over your brain, and you just know it’s going to be a sound you’ll hear in your dream! This is like a fever pitch trap song!
-FLOOR IT takes a step into more synth wave territory! A sound I haven’t heard since I was in high school! From those light and shimmering keys that feel angelic in nature. This comes with some heavy bass and more hypnotic drums that don’t feel as absorbed as they did in the previous track!
-TIME SPENT closes off the EP in a proper synth-overwhelming feel that is layered with cuts, scratches, and sonic watermarks that make this one feel properly chaotic. That first 15 seconds is as intense as it gets, that slowly calms into this synth-heavy progression of delicate patterns, heavy bass, and these drums! Similar formula as the last few tracks but with a bit more of an emphasis on ‘smooth’ or ‘atmospheric’ feel!
As far as the vocals go, I’ll be honest, they are heavily chaotic. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason, just a bunch of loud, abrasive, and abstract performances that feel like Cboi literally letting all his intrusive thoughts win and flood the EP! For better or worse, he’s not holding back on this album, and it makes for a rather interesting listening experience from a vocal standpoint!
It’s like a mix of WSG’s frantic personality mixed with Viper’s insanity on the mic with a sprinkle of JPEGMAFIA. If you combined the most batshit aspects of all three into a blender, this is no doubt what it would sound like, and honestly, it is a bit much for me, but again, I need to emphasise the fact this is an EP and it’s the right place to be pulling off these types of performances and ideas! He’s letting his heart, soul, and mind run wild across these 14 minutes, and I can’t get mad at him for that!
This unhinged style (at least as far as EP’s go) won’t be for everyone. I feel like he’s trying to experiment and express himself to find what he wants to do or sound going forward. Because although the instrumentals have a similar feel to them between each track, his vocals do flip between standard trap, experimental, noise, country grammar, and street poetry. He’s not content with sticking with one lane, so he’s decided to hijack all of them and utilise each song with his own dynamic and over-the-top vocals that I can’t say I enjoyed the extremity of it all but that I can respect he’s taking the gamble, he’s milking the EP for what it’s worth, and I guess finding himself!
What did you think about this one? Was it up your alley or not? Let me know!
