(City Raised Southern Ways)

It’s time to discuss a record between two men I wasn’t expecting to see together but now that they have I can’t see it any other way. Two men who are gifted in their own lanes but decided how was the time to covet together and put the culture on notice! So with that in mind let’s get to it!

This is the brand new album by MC Tajh Malik and Producer SPGBamm and together they drop this fantastic 8 track 27 minute project that features -JovaRosx and these two showcase why they are consistently considered some of the most underrated in the game right now!

I want to talk about MC work first! What I noticed about Tajh (as I have with the other releases where he persons the rapping role) is the way he can use his emotions, cadence and knowledge of the world to perform such strong and heartfelt deliveries on his bars!

You hear some rappers rap and it just sounds robotic or ‘by the book’ but not this man. He can make you feel like you’ve lived his life with a simple verse or two.

It’s as if he’s trying to teach us all a lesson, trying to educate us in the ways of literature, vocabulary and expression. The way he talks about his situation the way he describes the smallest details to further emphasis his narrative such as describing how young he looks and how his daughter would react if he decided to shave! These are such small points but are made larger because of the man performing!

Even if you sidelined all that he has utmost precision with his delivery, fluent flow, incredible penmanship and a key way with words. He’s a grand author with a passion for the hip hop scene and with every release I hear from him (old or new ) my validation to that fact grows!

As far as the producer side of things go, I’m very familiar with SPGB as he’s put out a handle of my favourite drops from last year and it seems he’s back on his prime shit with this one. If I had to try describe the feeling of this one it would be ‘smooth, atmospheric and ambient’ in nature. The type of beats to make you reflect on life!

I mean you got tracks like -Buck 50 which sounds like a 1980’s Drama film montage score with those beautiful Jazz Horns, long looped strings, infectious bass, delicate keys and some rhythmic drums that wraps this track up to feel like a song I’d expect to hear on films like ‘Lean On Me’ I also loved the sudden vocal harmony that appears towards the end!

There’s the song -Reverie which again has a gorgeous melody to it with those lively Miles Davis reminiscent Jazz Horns accompanied with some intricate piano keys in two layers one shimmering the other more in depth! There’s also some subtle yet delicate bass that wraps this whole track together!

This is the kind of song you can listen to, to relax your mind and take the load off at the end of a hard day!

This track once again has the out of nowhere vocal snippets towards the end!

Or what about the track -Movie Star! This one has a strong soulful vibe with those angelic vocal harmonies that are actually at the forefront of the song! (In two layers) one a solo performance the other a choir style!

On this one there’s some high pitch chord progressions and subtle drums that make everything about this track feel cinematically smooth in nature!

This is a duo for the ages. Two of the most creative men in the industry coming together for the sake of the culture. Thought provoking raps mixed with surreal production, what could be better?
