(Many Men)

A song title that everyone in the hip-hop game is familiar with. A track immortalised by 50 Cent, but does that mean no one else can make a killer track under the same name? Of course not, and with the flooding amount of talent in the culture, I have no doubt this track is going to go HARD and have everyone in the underground singing a different modern-day tune! Let’s talk about it!

So this is the new single by MC MAV and producer Kidd, called Quest ( ‘one of the dopest names in the game’), and together they drop this 2 minutes and 37-second track that moves to the sound of its own beat! So let’s start with the production!

On this track, we hear a few different key elements from the swaying chord progression that has this in-and-out effect that I really adored. There are some delicate keys that have this shimmering addition and also the heavy bass and some of the most hypnotic drums you’ve ever heard.

Sure, you can find a few similarities to the original, but I consider thempaying homage more than anything! A pair of artists who grew up on that music trying to make their own sound while paying respect to the original.

This one has a strong underground, atmospheric feel to it. I’d say it’s definitely an upgrade in many ways. Just the structural component of the track, Kidd’s attention to detail and technique is very much the same as Dr. Dre’s, and I mean that with all my heart. He brought this instrumental to life and helped MAV have the platform to go off on!

Speaking of MAV, his pair of verses were definitely a strong statement. First of all, I love the chorus aspect, the paying homage part to the original chorus. He does it in a fluent and catchy/engaging manner that added an extra layer of sonic texture to the track.

When we discuss his actual bars, we hear a man who has a history of powerful performances with sharp dialogue and a keen sense of word placement, flow, and the utmost confidence in his style to pull out verbal bangers that the culture remembers for months at a time!

On this track, I was moved by his verses because he sounded like he was tapping into his childhood self. Being able to be in a position where he can honour the ones who helped plant the seeds for his passion of the genre and do the tribute justice! He sounds excited, passionate, engaged, and fully aware that he has to do arguably some of his best verses to date to properly honour the track and its influence!

I’ve been a fan of MAV for a while now, and he never ceases to amaze me. Pair that with a producer of the calibre of Kidd, and you have an experience that can’t go wrong! Go listen for yourself and see!
