(Thirteen)

Well, I gotta admit. This album has a sound I definitely wasn’t expecting. We are talking about a man who, across the small handful of things I’ve covered of him, has shown a willingness to stick to a trap-flavoured lane and use that as the jump-off point, but on this one, we are seeing a different side of him that honestly kinda slapped! Let’s talk about it!

This is the brand-new EP by MC CboiDaSauceGod and produced by -RC Spaced, and together they release a three-track, 11-minute extravaganza with two features in the way of -5Smoke and -Big Shawty.

Now, let’s start with the MC side of things (because I want to discuss the bombshell production for last). We hear what I’d consider his most -Young Thug performance I think I’ve ever heard of him! I’m talking prime -JEFFERY & Beautiful Thugger Girls energy Thug. Those two albums I still hold in their own way are modern-day gems for Thug’s performances, and I feel the same way on this one!

In only 11 minutes, we hear Cboi show a restless, swagger-filled, and chaotic personality that we haven’t seen of him yet. This feels like his ‘experimental’ EP. The one where we can try out different techniques and mannerisms and see if they stick (which is actually what EP’s are meant to be used for), so I love that he’s doing that! We hear a brash confidence boost with his verses that I found rather infectious as he navigated the different sounds and tweaks to his cadence!

Whether it be more melodic notes or adlib-filled tracks, heavy vocal pitches or just his usual raw trap-filled rhythm, he’s going above and beyond to show us how many lanes he can pull off on this EP, and it kind of gives us a glimpse into the future of what he might be looking to go in the years to come! Either way, no one can say he doesn’t have the creative juices flowing! This EP proves that much!

As far as the production goes, this is where it gets WILD! Because we have three different sounds coming together to form some of the most insane and interesting instrumentals we’ve heard C rap on yet!

Starting with the first one we have -Sick, we have what sounds like electronic meets trap! With those synth-style chords in that fast-paced motion combined with some secondary layers of deep synth chords and fast-paced drums, that comes together in this chaotic motion that hits you with a shot of adrenaline right from the get-go!

On the song -Knew That, we have arguably the most traditional beat on the EP that is old-school Gucci Mane mid-2000s trap era with those sharp strings, thudding bass, and rhythmic drums that all come together in this rather nostalgic feel with those glistening piano keys in the background!

On track 3 -Next Level, we hear this heavy metal influence! (Yes, you heard that right) this song has these doom metal-inspired guitar strings that are combined with some glitchy keys, heavy chord progressions, and some minimal drum work and thick bass!

Would I say this is my favourite project by Cboi? No. But again, the purpose of an EP is to experiment and try new sounds and perspectives you wouldn’t risk on a full-length, and in the spirit of exploring and experimenting, I’d say this hit what it was going for, so shoutout to the duo (and features) for venturing into unknown territory with this one!
