‘The perfect formula for artist evolution’ This is the brand new between MC -Kil The Artist and Producer -Deevo Da Genius with features from
-TEGA

And I want to clarify one thing. I first discovered Kil back during that explosive debut album between the trio of BlueHill, Kil & Deevo! So when I say ‘this is the perfect formula’ I’m talking from that album till now!
Because for the longest time he’s been an inseparable to me to BlueHill, both men creating what could be perceived as the most dynamic chemistry in the underground for the last few years!

But In his latest efforts to persue a more solo heavy album set he’s showcasing why his alliance with those trademark names makes sense to begin with! He is one of the dopest lyricists we have in the industry and from how dope his last album was collaborating with Chef Bogey to this one with Deevo he’s shining in a way that I couldn’t perceive but now is becoming some of the best albums we’ve heard all year!

The way he’s pushing himself in the performance and lyrical front. With tracks like -DAPOWERUGAVE which is a sequel to the infamous Nas track ‘I Give You Power’ talking about Tech’s and it literally gave me chills the way he was able to continue such a legendary track into it’s own song and yet pay homage to the original! (While we are on the topic shoutout to BadSeed for creating his own sequel years ago as well)

Another aspect I’ve come to love is the restraint on features! Not that he had that many per project but it feels like he’s utilising his own explosive and eccentric performances to a higher degree in order to push his individual narrative and I love it because again he’s one of the strongest rappers we have, the way his sharp words hit the page, the way he’s able to describe stories and scenarios so vividly and create scene that lives in your head rent free for days or weeks at a time!

If I had to boil down Kil’s style into one sentence it would be ‘progression’ he’s never content with being how he is always striving for more. That’s the brilliance of ‘evolution’

When talking the production side of things we have regular collaborator Deevo. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t have heard of Kil and had this whole journey to begin with and I feel this album showcases the most ‘conceptual’ aspects of Deevo we’ve seen so far and that concept is ‘gun violence’

We see it in the name of the album ‘KILTECH’ reference to the commonly used ‘TEC-9’ gun! We hear various skits (some repeating throughout the album) of a guy shocked that on the box it says how the ‘TEC-9’ is the most used gun in America’ and how shocking that claim is. To the various gun crime snippets added to the album as well as gun shots to make the cliche ‘gun/violence rap’ theme a bit more serious and thought provoking in tone!

From that intro track which is appropriately named -ENTRY WOUND which filled with nothing but gun shots, the word ‘KilTech’ and those iconic Jazz horns with in film references danger. As I said Deevo is going above and beyond to make this one feel more sombre then the others!

An aspect I found genius was right after the Nas homage/sequel track -DAPOWERUGAVE which describes the life and sentient experience of a Tech! We have this next song -…SOULGO which has a sample of the hit song by -The Five Footsteps’ ‘O-O-H Child’ running through the track in that melodic instrumental that features glistening light keys in a slight distorted fashion, plucked bass strings and some rock and roll style drum beats!
What I find so genius about this set up is how we just finished going through one of the more serious/sombre tracks on the record and to act as a sort of ‘solace’ to all the crime and death we have the song itself telling us ‘things are gonna be easier’ and that is what you can smart set up!

Even the final two tracks are perfect. What feels like a tribute to the ones they all lost. The first one samples Jay-Z in a subtle yet beautiful execution alongside some lavish plucked bass, low drums and some gorgeous vocals to brighten the instrumental with!
This one effortlessly blends into the final track with some nice mixing and scratches that is more of the same of the first but in a more blues, soul blend that has a dreamlike aspect to it.

This one is more methodical, the vocal loop is deeper and more sombre. This one has those high-pitch chords with stripped-back bass! Acting the perfect soulful goodbye to one of the more cinematic efforts of the year.

To reinforce the intro. Kil has shown us ‘The perfect artist evolution’ he’s dominated the duo game, the feature game and now he’s dominating once again the solo game. He’s in the process of

(KIL)ling the Culture.
