First of all, is that not a dope ass name for an album? Sometimes the titles draw you in before you hear the music! This is a man who I first discovered last year and since then he’s continued to show his consistency and originality in the process and now we get to hear what he’s been up to lately and I’m hyped for it! Let’s talk about it!
This is the brand new album by MC -Mac Yames and Producer -Akomplice Beats with the two features being
-MELLOW FLANNEL
-BRAIIINSTORM
7 tracks, 19 minutes of content that to me feels like a sonic love letter to that Classic Wu Tang shit in it’s feel, execution and styles!
At the start of the EP you have that iconic ‘Kung Fu’ fighting sounds that Wu made so popular in the 90’s and it still hits just as hard in the modern day!
We have production value like -ART OF WAR which has a really vibrant/stripped back feel to it that I found hypnotic as hell! It’s a combination of plucked strings, rhythmic drum patterns as well as some heavy bass to create this hard rock meets boom Bap fusion that provides the appropriate levels of intensity for the likes of -Mellow to go off on!
There’s the track -IMPETUS which has this powerful synth quality to it that reminds me of 1980’s thriller movie montage scores! From those high pitch synth chords that loop around the entire track that’s combined with some later introduced violin strings in the background, trademark drum work and some light use of scratches to give it that extra texture of the 90’s! This is the type of instrumental creates for BARS!
And we even have the track -END OF DAYS which brings what I’d consider the most mellow experience to the record being the second last track!
Firstly I love those gorgeously arranged horns in that synchronous loop it adds a ton of texture to the track!
On top of that we have that smoothly incorporated scratches and cuts combined with those luscious piano keys that have that plucked & mysterious nature to them! I love how towards the end of the track we have a collection of violin strings to add somehow even more cinematic quality to the song!
Where we discuss Mac Yames himself we talk about a man who has spent the last year and a half building himself up to become as sharp, wise, lyrically sound and potent on the mic as he possibly can be and man does he pull it off on this! I’ve never heard him sound so passionate, so ruthless lyrically while packing extraordinary vocabulary to stun on his contemporaries and sounding smooth as hell doing it!
In only 19 minutes he showed everyone why he’s arguably one of the most underrated MC’s in the business! I’m talking the swift flows, in your face wordplay that makes you feel like your watching a seasoned samurai go to work using his verbal blades to strike you! An elite use of performance and technique wrapped into one dope MC who decided ‘you know what, 7 songs is all I’ll need to blow this shit wide open and he was right! Fantastic showing for sure!
Also only two features! Done should be the days of record with over crowded usage of features, the ones with a handful or less shine brightest because they rely on their own abilities and convictions to work and this is the example of that! Plus I love how both -BRAIIINSTORM and -MELLOW worked together across the track! A triple threat of excellence!
If you ain’t on this album then you’re missing out! Plus only 19 minutes, if you say you ain’t got time for that then you’re fucking lying! TUNE IN!
