It’s still insane to me how often I connect with new people! My reach gets wider by the week and this is one of those examples. Working with someone based on a different review I did is the definition of blessings! Let’s talk about this new one!
This is the brand new EP by MC & Producer Di-Visionary as he comes equipped with 6 tracks for a total run time of 11 minutes and 26 seconds!
Of course, going in I didn’t know what to expect! Never heard this man’s music until this EP and so there was of course nothing but curiosity on my part as to what this will sound like and I’ll be honest this was a trip and a half! Let me explain.
Firstly, the production was a lot more experimental/lo fi based then I was an expecting. From that opening track in where we have those lucid piano keys combined with those thick bass and drum beat combinations to create what sounds like a fever dream instrumental that gives you a sense of what’s to come!
And as the EP continues the sounds only get more atmospheric and surreal as the very next track -Darkness we get this acoustic feel track with those luscious piano keys being the main stay combined with the gradual drum work woven in and some singing notes from the man himself to create a stripped back experience that definitely feels more ‘Art Rap’ then anything else!
Even if we look at tracks like -Tape Filler that feels like a thriller movie scene montage score! From those shrieking keys in the background that has a slight echo effect and those powerful drum notes with some subtle chords that you can hear ever so softly in the midst of the other instrumentation to create this tense feel that feels like the adrenaline rush moment of the EP!
The way this EP ends is also quite interesting! On the song -Love Song we get what sounds almost ‘Surf Rock’ at the beginning with those plucked strings and atmospheric chords that later evolved into this premium lo fi/hip hop fusion that adds a blissful mix of elegant strings, rhythmic drum beats and these consistent keys in the background to maintain that angelic soundscape! What a way to close this off!
As far as the rapping side goes it’s the trademark style for this kind of production. I’m talking that minimalist, methodically paced emotionally heavy type raps that you might associate with rappers like -Milo (R.A.P Ferreira) how he use to sound in his early days under the alias of Milo, very introspective and raw to match his equally raw instrumentals.
So in adapting this perspective of rapping it does come with it’s ’pros’ and ‘cons’ the pros are if your a music fan who is into this kind of style you can appreciate the vulnerability and the emotional behind his bars, where you’d normally come to expect studio quality, complex verses you instead get rough around the edges in execution yet soul baring in penmanship and unbound creativity
From his mellow singing to his honesty about love and life these are concepts you wouldn’t normally get on your ‘mainstream’ records and to me that’s a plus!
But the cons is unfortunately a lot of the same things as I just mentioned but flipped. Alot of hip hop heads will hear this raw delivery and lo fi influence and turn their heads or call it boring or too slow or ‘indie’ for their liking and it’s a problem bound to be faced when an artist decides to go against the common strain and do something different and as long as the artist themselves can have the self a steam to carry on regardless then that’s a positive for them!
All I can ask the reader is that you click the EP and give it a try and support an independent artist! Will it be your favourite album of the year? I can’t decide that for you but what I can say is that he’s unique, doing something different and he deserves to at least be heard!
