FOOT ON YOUR NECK let’s talk about it!
This is the brand new EP by MC’s Rey Spyder & Saec Money with Production by Rey Spyder! With X-El on the hook of the finale track!
Now of course I didn’t know what to expect going into this since I hadn’t heard them prior but I was surprised to hear how cinematic they made the production! It wasn’t your cliché, one-trick pony boom-Bap sounds that feel copy-and-paste by so many artists these days! This one felt lively, colourful, and engaging!
Whether you want to discuss the track -Slaughter which has this ominous & haunting vibe to it that I loved. From those opening echoing chords and methodical keys that strum in 8 second intervals to create maximum theatrical effect!
This one also has these mesmerising drum patterns and such sickening bass that it blends in with the rest of the intense instrumentation!
The following song -Life Is Beautiful is approximately named because this track has a hint of positivity and harmony to it that I loved! From those glistening keys to that gorgeous chipmunk vocal loop and those synth style chords that run throughout the track!
This one also contains some thick bass and rhythmic drum work that
This one has a light ‘G-Funk’ feel to it that made it feel that much stronger in atmosphere!
The final track -Forever ends the EP off with a sombre note that is so beautifully balanced with a Soul/Funk/Hip-Hop fusion that leaves a lasting effect on the audience!
Firstly that chorus by -X-El gave the track a heavy emphasis on emotional impact that you can feel in your heart and soul.
Alongside these, there are some sharp violin strings, droning drum work, thick bass and some light keys that sprinkle some lighter texture to the instrumental!
I love how the song ends with that chorus which was the best way to close the EP off!
As far as the MC work goes, these two define ‘chemistry’ as they give off a different vibe and cadence between them. What I found most interesting was Rey’s consistent use of bi-lingual phrases and verses! It adds a nice layer of versatility to the performances and the EP as a whole!
Across the board these two men showcase different yet well synced verses across the 5 tracks that feel exciting, energised and passionate! Each song is a different story, side and perspective on their journey as MC’s which makes for a compelling listen! Whether it’s more raw and gritty cuts like on -Slaughter or more upbeat and groovy cuts like on -Life Is Beautiful they know how to analyse and deliver the specific characteristics to make the tracks shine! It’s ingenious how they are able to pull it off!
Both men have solid & fluent flow, consistent rhythm and wordplay. A pen game that’s strong and to the point! A chemistry that can be felt through the headphones and a sense of pride and conviction that each bar is well thought out and purposefully designed for each track. Considering this album is only 14 minutes long they pack so much vibrant energy across the board that it feels like a fully developed LP!
I’m glad I was able to discover this duo because now they will be on my radar permanently. Insane production with even crazier bars! Tune in now!
