If you’ve been following my work long enough you’ll know I’m a sucker for conceptual albums. To me when an artist decides to focus on a specific idea or theme and bring it to life is one of the greatest things you can experience in music (Hip-Hop or otherwise) and today we get an example of that in true conceptual fashion! So let’s talk about it!
This is the September release by MC -Fubar and Producer -MagiCXbeats and together they drop this astounding 7 track project with the sole feature of -Eclyse and this album is as deep and rich as you’d find any in the music scene.
Essentially speaking this album is about ‘What happens when you stop waiting for something outside of yourself to fix what’s broken’ and that’s already is a concept that I’ve yet to hear anyone else touch on so far and in turn makes this a peak interest to dive into!
Let’s start with the lyricism side. I fucking loved how intricate, in depth and direct Fubar was on this album. It’s as if he was a professor in a university sitting us all down and revealing to us all his opinions, facts and views on life and the mindset to survive it!
As is the nature of this album he’s discussing everything from the consequences of certain actions, the danger of relying on religion and in general the pitfalls of everyday life and how to mentally avoid them!
What’s stunning to me is how he communicates these messages! He does so in this poetry rap style that I adore. It’s one of my favourite approaches in rap music and he has added to that with a complex vocabulary, sharp penmanship and an introspective approach to match.
Again, this feels less like ‘Hip-Hop Verses’ and more like insights from a profound teacher whose trying to enlighten us with his own truths and the blunt wisdom of things such as ‘how to deal with betrayal and trauma and anxiety’ and of course on how to get through to the other side.
You need to realise that he’s taking us all on this educational employment using some of the most impactful lyricism and creative ways to spit verses I’ve heard yet! He’s calm yet powerful, fluent yet sharp! He’s inheriting all the important trains to make a memorable listening experience and it left me craving for more when it was all said and done!
Also shoutout to my main man -Eclyse on his verse in -The Air Has Edges because as usual he bodied that shit!
Now onto the production aspect. I wanted to highlight specifically three tracks in further detail but to note that this entire album is as you’d think it would be based on my description of the performance. It’s grand, cinematic and helps amplify the narrative of the heavy topics being discussed!
So first we have the track -Fire Under Snow. Right off the bad I love that intro that has this methodically charged rhythm full of those deep bass strings and tweaking chords in the background! I love how it evolves into this almost sci-fi sounding track with those looping shrieking chords that’s all accompanied with some hypnotic drums and later these eerie vocal harmonies that sound otherworldly themselves!
There’s the track -Above It, Not Beyond It which in comparison to the above track has a lot more of a smooth, melodic energy that I found infectious as hell! This one has these luscious keys that echo throughout the instrumental! Those are met with some minimal drum work with some subtle bass lines
This one has a strong ambient quality to it that I found fused with the Hip-Hop side of things perfectly!
Finally we have -Wouldn’t Harm A Fly which is the closing track on the album and it starts with a spoken word passage saying ‘You have to save yourself, by pulling the saviour out of you!’ And with that tone set the song progresses with these muffled keys that have this cinematic effect to them!
We also hear another vocal track of some woman who has this eerie feeling to her voice. But besides that the track itself feels like a grand orchestra! From those larger-than-life horns, heavy drums and this consistent men’s choir sound that has a cult effect on the atmosphere! This is the best outro you can ask for! It’s theatrical, surreal and gives the listener goosebumps!
If you’re someone who is looking for ‘that little bit more’ out of your hip-hop then this will scratch that itch. It you want to discover a new artist and don’t know where to start then this is where you go! Or if you just want some dope fucking Hip-Hop then look no further! This duo of Fubar X MagiCXbeaats delivers what 90% of the culture can’t! A thrilling, impactful conceptual album and it’s something you won’t forget!
