The more I think about it, this man utilises the ‘originality’ complex to it’s utmost extent. Not only is on his own lane but his music is whatever he wants it to be! As in he’s not bound to be labelled just ‘Hip-Hop’ but he can rap? It’s a fascinating experience listening to this man’s work and today is another one of those days! Let’s talk!

This is brand new record by MC -Errol Holden with Production from
-SHVMIRE
-2000 Souls
-Alkan
-Billaveli
-Playa Haze
-The StandOuts
-Noevelude

And from what I’ve heard of him so far, this might be his most experimental and cinematic record to date! We get that feel from that opening track ‘All Hail The Foulness’ in which we hear that over a minute of lush & grand blues style guitar strings that sets the stage for that high energy instrumental for Errol to introduce himself on! This is hands down the most interesting start to a song I’ve heard by a rapper so far! Has a real ‘Funkadelic’ energy to it that I loved as you get that live music vibe that slowly morphed into that abrasive boom Bap production featuring those sharp strings, rock and roll drums and bass lines as cold as you’ll ever hear on a track!

Something you notice throughout this album is Errol’s fantastic use of either spoken word conversations, vocal snippets and other talking elements that make this album feel that much more surreal and personal. For example on the track -King Heroin which is over a minute of a phone call or zoom interview between two men and they say a great quote ‘it cost money to make money’ which is very true!
We have songs like -What Do You Say To Drugs? Which again starts off with this time kids repeating a creed or motto in a school setting which sets up the track which adds more immersion to the record!

The song -From A Place Wit A Name Bigger Than A Kountry That Ain’t Even A Borough had me smiling because of how the track starts! Because we have someone turn on a Jukebox which initiates that slick, funky instrumental that reminds me of 1980’s Funk music as we hear yet another conversation displayed for some more realism on the album.

I’ve yet to hear another album this year utilise the things that Errol has! It’s more then just a rap album, more than Hip-Hop hell more then music! He’s giving us a living, breathing soundtrack with characters and their opinions, philosophies and stories woven into the hip hop itself and when done right it’s a fucking genius idea and Errol was definitely the man for the job!

When we discuss the performance aspect I mean, who can you really put over Errol when he’s on his zone? When he’s locked in the way he is on this album he’s gonna be Top 10-Top 5 consideration!
The way he’s able to spit his bars at fast paced intervals while remaining clear and consistent, clever in his wordplay, maintain his solid charisma and never break his rhythm! That shit ain’t easy and yet he makes it look that way!

It’s not just his mastery of the MC role but he’s also mindful of the protection and the atmosphere he’s created for himself on this album and performs accordingly. What I mean is that he’s not just gonna spit some bullshit right after a majestic intro track that we got on here! His verses had meaning and importance in the lyricism as it did for the other tracks that imprinted key vocals to increase the emphasis of immersion on the record!
He’s a rapper with a purpose and each bar has a reason for being that and that’s what really separates him from a lot of his contemporaries!

I also respect how he remains featureless on this album! When you’re the man you don’t need validation from others you just go out and prove it and this is once again the case for Errol. Providing he can easily maintain the attention and respect of the audience with just him alone and captivate you the whole 32 minutes long! Not many rappers can say the same!

The second was definitely dope but I feel this one is even more so! It’s my favourite project of his so far and he nails every aspect alongside some phenomenal production!
