Man, Deevo is literally everywhere! In the last 2 years I’ve seen him work with more than a dozen of different MC’s. First discovered him alongside BlueHill and Kil The Artist and has since rooted himself in a who’s who of underground artists and hasn’t missed once! So with that in mind let’s discuss this new album with an artist I’m new too! This is the brand new album by MC -Erdnaez The Weapon and Producer -Deevo Da Genius with features from -Reef -M-P and with just these two names he comes equipped with 22 minutes of straight fire that provides the perfect soundscape for this rapper to showcase his talents and worth in the culture! First thing I noticed was how incredible mellow and borderline nonchalant he sounded. Sometimes it’s the cats who utilise the lighter approach that hit the hardest and on this one he combines his soft spoken energy with in depth lyricisms and smooth flow to create verses that make it easier to understand and follow along too! He’s proving that you don’t need to go wild and over the top to get your point across. I love how he utilises a range of hypnotic choruses such as on ‘DON’T EVER’ where we hear him just repeat the same line over and over again for a droning effect that stays drilled in your head! It’s interesting his lyrical topics. He dives between personal stories and experiences to brash and bragging bars. Cultivating the trademark street bars while taking time to ever so slightly deviate every now and then to speak his mind and force the listener to ponder on his words! The two features listed helped progress the album along with their own individual traits and cadences to amplify the various tracks they were on! The Weapon was able to lock in with solid chemistry and maintains the ‘Main character’ role across the album! Of course, speaking of the production process we have Deevo who this time around creates one of the most lavish and classic scores we’ve heard him utilise yet! This one had be relaxed almost falling asleep at it’s tranquil execution! For example tracks like -WILLIE WEATHERS with that gorgeous vocal sample loop that sounds like it was ripped from the 1960’s! You’ve got that combined with those luscious strings, delicate piano keys and subtle bass! This is the track that features -Reef who as mentioned above amplified the track! What about the track -COME UP STORY which has this lo fi/ambient inspired vocal harmony that is atmospheric as hell in its execution! This one features some minimal drum work, sharp synth style chords and lively keys that glisten in the background. This one feels like you just smoked a fat blunt surrounded by nature on a beautiful sunny day! It’s a vibe in and of itself that you could honestly sink your mind into! The song -DICE GAME DOWN SOUTH has that old school New Jack Swing inspired vocal performance on loop that struck me immediately (as I was raised on that type of music) that is accompanied by some surreal piano keys, methodical drum work and some strummed strings that play a more subtle roll across the instrumental! One of the more stripped back and bare experiences on the album but man does it strike you right in the soul! Especially towards the end when Deevo slows down the sample for a more trippy effect! All in all, a solid performance by everyone involved. The raps were solid, the production same so! Alongside some fantastic features, I guess all that’s left to say is KEEP UP MOTHERFUCKER!
